Tips and strategies for busy adults to carve out time for their artistic passions.
Life can get busy, and in today's fast-paced world, it can be hard to carve out time for art. However, it's definitely possible and incredibly rewarding. Here are some tips to help you balance your life, work and art:
1. Carry a sketchbook everywhere!
An easy way to begin integrating more art into your daily life is to carry a sketchbook everywhere you go. That way, you can make use of any idle time during your commute, waiting for a friend or even in work meetings (shh).
I recommend using a small sketchbook that can fit into your pocket, and using a ballpoint or fountain pen for ease of use and access. It's easy to take everywhere and doesn't need to be a whole complicated setup.
In particular, my favourite sketchbooks are the Pocket Plain Moleskine Cahiers.
2. Create a Schedule
Figure out what your week looks like, and create a schedule for when you would like to do art. Then stick to it! It's easier to stay consistent when you have a clear plan to follow. Times can include: An hour before or after work, Saturday mornings or Sunday evenings just as an example. But it's better to do a little every day than just a massive block on one day, as getting into the habit is what's important.
3. Online resources
There are plenty of great resources on YouTube and many awesome books to read that can teach you a great deal about art. Here are just a few of my favourites:
Marco Bucci's 10 Minutes to Better Painting
Andrew Loomis Books
Robert Beverley Hale Lectures
4. Join an art class/do a workshop
Of course, learning from other painters and joining a community of like-minded people can also help with your art and motivation. At Hamley Studio, we have a range of classes over the day and evening, as well as weekend workshops and sketch clubs to cater to your busy schedule. We also allow for flexible/make-up classes if you miss one. Take a look at our classes here: https://www.hamleystudio.com.au/classes-and-workshops
